Construction activity underway in the Spinal Injuries Unit

The QSCIS Enhancement Program

Infrastructure works overview

The Infrastructure Program at the Spinal Injuries Unit will include three additional bathrooms, kitchen enhancements to diversify meal options for patients, expanded rehabilitation therapy spaces, and modified clinical space with the re-organisation of the Spinal Injuries Unit and Division of Rehabilitation offices. The project will be a partnership between Metro South Health and Health Capital Division, Department of Health. It will be guided by previous and new user group feedback, and active consultation with staff and consumers/carers.

Project specific information

Disruptive works have been ongoing in the Spinal Injuries Unit throughout 2025 to deliver on the widely consulted enhancements to the ward.

  • Bathrooms – 3 additional bathrooms have been delivered within the ward (complete)
  • Therapy spaces expanded – by increasing storage and redesigning the therapy areas, more space was achieved (complete)
  • Storage and consult rooms – reallocation of space to store the significant equipment required for rehabilitation created space for therapy areas (complete)
  • The kitchen and dining room is a key feature to improve life on the ward as suggested by consumers in the user group (complete)
  • The ward linkway to dining room and laundry – this linkway was essential to deliver feedback  from patients who wanted a greater connection to the dining room and indoor recreational space throughout day and night without transitioning outside (works ongoing)
  • Division of Rehabilitation offices – the movement of the offices as well as administration spaces from the ward was essential to creating the footprint to add the bathrooms, therapy expansion, and increased storage. The new offices repurposed a defunct back of house space into modern offices for clinicians and researchers of the division
  • Deck enhancement – the deck now has inclusions for family time, managing the weather and improved aesthetic and was ready in time for the closure of the dining room for works (complete)
  • Family room and ward storage – these spaces were repurposed to provide more functionality for staff accessing equipment for patient care and a more family-friendly space that was altered for larger wheelchair access (complete)
  • Outpatient procedure room – the addition of an additional procedure room with wider access improves clinic functionality (complete)
  • Patient Engagement System – the complex technical upgrade to bedside screens which includes entertainment, environmental controls, nurse call and patient scheduling requires adaptive features for patients with decreased mobility (complete).
