We're investing over $748 million to expand our buildings and increase our health services at Princess Alexandra Hospital (PA Hospital).
The upgrades include:
- more inpatient beds
- extensions and renovations to our existing buildings
- new cancer and kidney disease treatment services
- more health services.
The upgrades will make it easier for our community to access health services and provide more specialist and emergency care.
Changes at PA Hospital – what you need to know
If you are visiting the PA Hospital in the coming months, you will notice some changes around our campus. These changes may include:
- construction noise
- changes to hospital entry and exit points
- changes to traffic flow or parking.
To avoid delays, we suggest allowing extra time for your trip to the hospital. If possible, consider using public transport as an alternative to driving.
Please follow any safety signs and instructions from traffic controllers or construction workers.
The health and safety of our community, patients, visitors and staff are our top priority during construction. We want you and your family to feel welcome and comfortable during your visit. If you have any questions, feel free to speak with one of our staff members or email us at PAHospitalExpansion@health.qld.gov.au
Why we’re expanding
The south east Queensland population is growing, and more people will need access to quality health care in our area. PA Hospital is also one of our busiest hospitals and provides specialist health services for patients across Queensland. The upgrades will help us meet the needs of our community and treat more people with acute and complex health needs. The upgrades will also improve and modernise our facilities.
The upgrades are part of the Queensland Hospital Rescue Plan. We've planned them based on:
- our medical and clinical health service needs
- information about our population and expected growth
- feedback and consultation with our patients and community
- advice from builders, engineers, and design experts.
What we're building
- 4 new floors built on top of our existing emergency department
- 249 more inpatient beds, including 30 extra intensive care bed and treatment areas
- 13 new cancer treatment bays
- refurbished admission and recovery area to support our cardiac catheter lab service
- expansion of medical imaging, pharmacy and kitchen.
Queensland Spinal Cord Injuries Service Enhancement Program
A $20 million infrastructure uplift at the state’s Spinal Injuries Unit is well advanced delivering on:
- 3 additional bathrooms

Get involved
We're working with people and groups from our community to help plan the upgrades and get feedback including:
- user groups where we co-designed clinical and public spaces with architects and clinicians
- consultations about the look and design of the upgrades and wayfinding strategy
- the hospital site’s building approval with local council.
We also worked with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and Traditional Owners to make sure the upgrades are culturally safe.
If you’d like to get involved, you can also apply to volunteer with us or become a consumer partner.

Jobs
As we grow and finish our upgrades, we’ll need new staff members to join our team. We'll have jobs across all areas including nursing, medicine, allied health, pharmacy and business support.
You can search our vacancies or register your interest for future jobs when our hospital upgrades open.
