We're investing over $300 million to upgrade Redland Hospital, build new medical units and increase our treatment spaces.
The upgrades include:
- more inpatient beds
- new intensive care unit
- more mental health inpatient treatment facilities and services
- more car parking.
The upgrades will increase our hospital capacity and help us provide more specialist health care services to our community. It will also help us care for more patients who need surgery or emergency care closer to home.
Building started in 2020. Some upgrades have already finished, including a new multi level car park and 28 bed medical ward. We expect all upgraded services and buildings to open by 2027.
There may be changes to hospital entry points or parking when we're building. If you’re going to hospital, you can search our health services to check if there are any changes you need to know.
Why we’re expanding
The Redlands Coast community is growing. We expect more than 30,000 more people to live here in the next 10 years. Our upgrades and new buildings will make sure we’re ready for this growth and can continue to provide quality health care to our community. It will also improve patient wait times in our emergency department.
The upgrades are part of the Queensland Health and Hospitals Plan. We've planned them based on:
- our medical and clinical health service needs
- information about our population and expected growth
- feedback and consultation with our patients and community
- advice from builders, engineers and design experts.
What we’re building
We’re upgrading our buildings and services in stages. We’ve already opened the following new facilities.
- 28 bed ‘Lagoon Ward’ medical unit with 1 and 2 bedrooms, office space and treatment areas
- Upgraded birthing unit with 2 new birthing suites and 3 birthing pools
- Larger emergency department with 4 more beds
- 7 level car park with over 1,000 undercover spaces.
Stage 1 hospital expansion
Stage 1 is a $77.9 million investment and includes:
- a new intensive care unit with critical care and life support facilities
- 37 more inpatient beds.
The upgrades will help patients get emergency care closer to home without needing to be transferred to other hospitals. The new bed spaces will also help us treat more people who need surgery or overnight hospital stays.
We expect stage 1 to open in 2025.
New mental health facility
A $150 million investment will build a new mental health facility. It includes:
- more mental health services
- 20 new inpatient beds.
Relocating the mental health building will free up critical land on the hospital site, paving the way for the Stage 2 hospital expansion.

Get involved
We're working with people and groups from our community to help plan the upgrades and get feedback including:
- design user groups where we co-design clinical and public spaces with architects and clinicians
- consultations about the look and design of the upgrades and wayfinding strategy
- the hospital site’s building approval with local council.
We also worked with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and Traditional Owners to make sure the upgrades are culturally safe.
