Redland Hospital’s Kidney Dialysis Unit has welcomed graduate nurse T'nyshe (Te) Faagase this year after beginning her nursing journey as a School Based Trainee at Logan Hospital.
Te said the traineeship had developed into a career dedicated to patient care at Redland Hospital which she loved for its friendly, community feel.
She said growing up in a culture where family and community were paramount, she was able to bring a unique perspective to her role, especially in the Kidney Dialysis Unit where she now worked.
She said her personal experience had influenced her decision to pursue nursing as a career.
“My grandfather passed away at Logan Hospital, and I saw the nurses and how much they helped my family and supported us.
“To see that from them at such a young age, I thought that’s beautiful, I want to share that joy with another family.
"In this ward it's not just patients who come and go, they are here three times a week,” she said. “You get to know them as a person, you know their family, and that's something that I'm very passionate about.”
Te's commitment to her profession and her patients like Alexandra Hills local Arthur Harrison, shines through. Arthur said Te had a good sense of humour.
"Te was very shy when she first started, but she's become accustomed to my sense of humour,” he said.
“Last week, I pretended to scream when she popped the needle in for my dialysis, that was fun," he recounted with a smile.
"I've been to many public and private hospitals, and I rate Redland Hospital on par, or honestly above, all of them.”
Te said her biggest challenge so far had been transitioning from being a student to a registered nurse.
"Relying on and having confidence in your clinical decision making is a big step and has been a challenge for me as a graduate nurse," she admitted.
But it's a challenge she's ready to face, especially in a unit with opportunities to build lasting relationships with patients.
Thanks Te for all of the joy you bring to our patients and their families!
