Beloved colleague and Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) Surgical Services, Anne Chiverall has claimed the highest honour at QEII's International Nurses Day (IND) Awards this May, after being named QEII's 2025 Nurse of the Year.
A shining example on and off the ward, Anne’s extraordinary career is paved in a legacy of compassionate care extending from her patients to peers.
Anne’s passion for people traces back over four remarkable decades to 1984, when she completed her nurse training at PA Hospital before making the move to QEII in 1988.
From orthopaedic nurse to scrub scout, Anne trained her way to Orthopaedic Clinical Nurse, gathering a wealth of experience from Burns and Plastics units to community and private nursing roles over the years, cementing her passion for surgical nursing.
By 2004, Anne took her place as Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) of Ward 2A, where she would thrive for 16 remarkable years before taking her position as CNC in 2020.
“I didn’t become a NUM for the title. I just thought I could make a difference, and I hope I did,” she said.
Between overseeing the NUMs of 2A and 2B, and providing clinical support as a surgical nursing expert, it’s Anne’s passion for people that guides her work as a CNC and sets an example to her peers today.
“To me, the secret to being compassionate is being genuinely interested in other people and what they do, so I make it my business to know the people I work with, check on them when they’re out of sorts and help them find solutions.”
While she embraces the next chapter and her new title, Anne’s exemplary leadership is already inspiring the next generation of QEII nurses.
“If I could give any advice to new nurses, I would encourage them to be present in the ward they work in, really understanding it and developing a passion for it,” Anne explained.
“Take note of your colleagues, be a part of the team, and give anything a go. Never say no, because so many doors can open for you.”
With her sights set on making the most of the rest of her career, Anne looks forward to new horizons as the hospital prepares for growth.
“I have always wanted to make a difference, and I still want that today. I still enjoy it and I still have plenty of energy and plenty to give to QEII.”
Congratulations on this and many more achievements and thank you for your exemplary commitment to patient-centred care, Anne!
