Princess Alexandra Hospital has unveiled a beautiful new treatment area adjacent to Oncology Day Care on Ground Level which opens to patients this week.

The space has been purpose-built for future Cancer Services, however, will play an important temporary role in enabling construction works on Level 1 as part of the PA Hospital Expansion.

It will be home to part of the Medical Assessment and Planning Unit (MAPU) for the next 12 months, maintaining MAPU’s important role in supporting the Emergency Department and acute medical care.

PAH Executive Director Dr Jeremy Wellwood said the opening is a momentous occasion on the journey to expansion and the space will provide a calm and healing environment for the patients we care for.

“This is the future of ambulatory cancer care at the PA Hospital,” he said.  “It’s also going to be part of one of the biggest cancer therapy areas in Queensland.”

The space looks almost unrecognisable from the previous bed storage area.

MAPU will maintain 32 bedspaces across the new Ground Level and existing Level 1, and will be staffed by the same incredible clinical and support teams.

Additional staffing is also in place to support service delivery and patient safety across the two locations.

Divisional Director of Medicine Jenny Paton praised the MAPU team for their hard work, flexibility and dedication to high-quality care.

“Thank you to cancer for allowing us into this space, and it’s a privilege to have the opportunity to be the first team to use this space,” she said.

Well done to everyone at PAH who has enabled this important milestone in the hospital expansion program.
