Small steps are making a big impact at Metro South’s Southern Moreton Bay Islands Community Partnership Service (SMBI CPS), where one team is putting its best food forward for environmental sustainability.
Launched in early 2025, the CPS team’s green initiative was inspired by their daily client home visits, which are often made on foot.
Nurse Unit Manager Rachael James and the team identified an opportunity to make the walks more meaningful, by collecting discarded cans and bottles for recycling along the way.
Soon, what started as a simple idea evolved into a daily habit for the multidisciplinary team.
“Over the past year, we’ve collected more than 2,000 bottles and cans,” Rachael said.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the project inspired a more united team culture, with staff rewarded for their efforts and profits recycled back into local business.
“At the end of each month, funds raised from recycling are used to treat the team to a fish and chip lunch that supports a local business next door to our premises in Cornubia,” Rachael explained.
“This initiative not only brings us together as a team and supports our community but also helps keep the Southern Moreton Bay Islands clean—doing our part for the environment,” Rachael said.
It’s one example of how Metro South Health staff are making a positive impact on the environment and within the workplace.
