Metro South Health has celebrated the achievements of its latest School Based Traineeship graduates – a talented group of Year 11 and 12 students who have taken their first steps toward a career in healthcare.

Over the past 12 months, the trainees have combined school with one paid day a week at Metro South Health, gaining hands-on experience while completing a Certificate III qualification.

The program offers students a pathway to future employment opportunities with the health service, and for many, the experience has been life changing.

Assistant in Nursing (AIN) trainee Darcy L’Barrow said the program gave her the chance to build confidence while learning on the job.

“I liked getting real experience while having support to learn,” Darcy said.

“As I got more confident, I had more freedom. I really enjoyed interacting with patients and hearing their stories.”

Darcy plans to stay on in Metro South Health’s casual pool while studying a Bachelor of Nursing.

She said other high school students should consider applying for the School Based Traineeship Program to get a taste of a career in healthcare.

“Even if you’re not sure – it’s a great opportunity to experience another career path,” she said.

“Be prepared for some confronting situations, but remember it’s the illness, not the person. Take care of your own mental health and talk to people.”

For fellow AIN graduate Taylor Pirika, making connections with health professionals and personal growth were highlights.

“The social aspect was really rewarding,” Taylor said.

“I learned a lot about how to deal with uncomfortable situations and developed so much through the course.”

The School Based Traineeship Program continues to give young people across Metro South region the opportunity to explore health careers, build practical skills and discover their passion – all while still at school.
