“We are trusted, we are capable, we are critical.”
These were the powerful words delivered by Logan and Beaudesert Health Service (LBHS) Nursing and Midwifery Director Hannah Gaj at this year’s International Day of the Midwife celebration.
The event, awash in trademark midwifery purple, delivered a timely tribute to the crucial role midwives play in healthcare and in supporting the health and wellbeing of women and children.
As she reflected on this year’s international theme, Critical in Every Crisis, Hannah shared stories from midwives across the globe.
“No matter where or how we practise, what unites us as midwives is our expertise, our shared identity, and our unwavering commitment to women and families,” she said.
“In the face of natural disasters, conflict, climate change, and humanitarian emergencies, midwives continue to provide safe births, antenatal and postnatal care, and protect communities with knowledge and compassion.”
While the celebrations acknowledged the whole cohort’s contribution, Logan and Beaudesert hospitals gave special recognition to a few remarkable midwives as voted by their colleagues.
Kylie Wickens was named Logan’s Midwife of the Year for her unwavering kindness, clinical excellence and deep empathy.
Taking out the title of Midwifery Team of the Year was Logan’s Maternity Inpatient Unit. Their nomination applauding their teamwork, kindness and adaptability.
Beaudesert Hospital named Nicole Tucker, "a fierce advocate for Beaudesert Maternity" as their Midwife of the Year, resulting in a double celebration as she celebrated 40 years of service with Queensland Health.
We look forward to sharing more on our winners in the coming weeks.
