A behind-the-scenes look at the diverse world of allied health has some local high-school students considering a future in the field.
The 25 students attended a hands-on career experience event at Logan Hospital, where they explored a day in the life of different allied health professionals across a range of hospital settings before engaging with staff at interactive workstations.
Bubbly Year 11 student Zainabu put her balance to the test with a pair of crutches as she chatted with the physiotherapy team.
Visiting from McGregor State High School, she said the experience had her rethinking her original plan to become a nurse.
“I will definitely consider a career in allied health too,” she said.
There were plenty of laughs at the occupational therapy station as students tackled the challenge of putting on incontinence underwear using support aids and without bending their knees.
The activity was a fun way for our Occupational Therapist's to demonstrate how their work helped patients adapt to everyday tasks and regain independence following illness or injury.
The psychology team’s virtual reality headset also got a workout as students learned how the technology could be used to support emotional wellbeing and help patients manage phobias through desensitisation.
Psychologist Lucinda Pettit declared the morning a huge success, praising the students’ enthusiasm and curiosity.
“We loved the opportunity to engage with all of the lovely students and were impressed by their intelligent questions,” she said.
Workforce Development Officer Jacqueline Cotugno and Traineeship Program Coordinator Amanda Augustine said they hoped the event generated interest in allied health career pathways on offer across LBHS.
"This is the first time we've had a dedicated allied health experience event at the hospital, and we're so pleased at how enthusiastically the event was received by local schools," Jacquie said.
"Thank you to the well-mannered and eager students who attended - the future of allied health looks very bright!"
