The QEII Hospital Expansion reached a major milestone last week, with the final cement pour occurring at the new five-storey Clinical Services building (CSB) in early February.

This signifies the completion of the structural phase of the building, known as topping-out, which allows the fit-out to advance.

Executive Director of QEII Jubilee Hospital, Gillian Campbell heralded the milestone as a great opportunity for QEII to welcome the stakeholder partners to stand atop the final slab and also acknowledge how significant this is in the life of the expansion project.

“For all of us coming to QEII every day for work, we have visually seen the changes taking shape before our eyes,” Gillian said. “This topping-out milestone for the Clinical Services building, means so much for the future of QEII Hospital and how it delivers for the community.

"We are excited to be part of this celebration and our involvement with the Expansion projects which will really put QEII Hospital on the map – with the benefits of these projects designed to increase services, improve functionality of existing facilities, and make the environment more contemporary and comfortable for patients, visitors, and staff," she said.

“I want to acknowledge the enormous amount of work that has been done by everyone, including the Metro South Health Service Expansion team and our QEII Project as we look ahead to the next milestone on the campus.”

With construction of the new Clinical Services building commencing in February 2025, Health Infrastructure Queensland Project Director, Jacqueline Hawkins acknowledged the importance of traditions and celebrations for these large-scale projects to highlight the effort and absolute commitment of all the partners.

“All stages in the project have been invaluable to the progress we are making,” Jackie said. “We have had the investment of representatives across the partnership in the project user groups to understand the priorities and get things right.”

Some fast facts from construction partner Built Australia for the CSB construction include:

  • 50,000 work hours in manual labour
  • 1500 people inducted on the project
  • 29 slabs in 21 weeks (first 4 July 2025 | last 12 Feb 2026).

Built Construction Manager, Andrew Michael is excited to be on track for completion by 2028.

“For me, the commitment and personal achievement of everyone with boots on the ground, as well as the project team, has meant that we are topping out the structure faster than we thought we could,” he said.

Despite extended periods of rain, an ex-tropical cyclone, and the complexities of two major construction projects plus a high voltage upgrade on the same campus, all partners are celebrating every milestone in the journey to delivering for the community.

The expanded QEII Hospital will deliver 112 new inpatient beds, upgraded surgical facilities, expanded intensive care, and a new multi-level car park with 1,379 spaces to support growing demand for access to QEII Hospital.
