Helping others is second nature for new QEII Volunteer Joanne

Retirement hasn't slowed Sau-Kuen (Joanne) down; in fact, it has opened the door to an exciting new chapter of giving back at QEII Hospital.

Joanne joined the QEII volunteer team in June and can be found welcoming patients and visitors at the front foyer concierge desk every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon.

After a long career working in aged care, Joanne said volunteering is the perfect way to keep making a difference.

"I decided I wanted to retire this year to enjoy my life because I am 61, but I am happy to stay active and keep contributing," Joanne said.

"I enjoy helping people. I'm really close to the Chinese community here, and I speak Mandarin and Cantonese, so I can help with translation."

Joanne brings a wealth of experience from roles with aged care providers including Regis, Opal and Catholic Health Care, where she organised activities for older Australians. She is already looking for new ways to contribute at QEII, discussing ideas such as sensory activities, music therapy and dancing for patients living with dementia.

Joanne said she is already finding her volunteer role incredibly rewarding.

"I'm just getting used to the system, but I'm really enjoying it," she said. "I feel good that I’m helping people."

QEII Volunteer Coordinator Amanda Spann said volunteers like Joanne played a vital role in creating a welcoming experience for patients, visitors and staff.

"QEII has 72 registered volunteers ranging in age from 19 to 90, working across 12 different volunteer programs," Amanda said.

"Together, our volunteers contribute an average of 420 hours every week, helping patients and visitors feel welcome, supported and connected throughout their hospital journey.

“We are so pleased to have Joanne on the team!”
