QEII Hospital’s first ever Deadly Start Program graduates are passing down the mantle this July, after a big year of hands-on learning gave them a taste for careers in health.

Embracing placements between nursing and allied health specialties, the energetic group of five learned from QEII’s experienced clinicians while gaining valuable practical experience on the front line.

As she wraps up her placement at Ward 2B, aspiring NICU nurse Raihaana (centre) is empowered by her time at the general surgical ward where her passion for nursing bloomed this year.

“The traineeship has been very educational for me. I've learned so much from the great nurses at the ward, and I've loved meeting new people and seeing firsthand what nurses go through in their day-to-day,” she said.

Trainee Cytheria had an inspired journey at her home Ward 2A, where she’s thrived while making meaningful connections with patients and staff.

“My favourite part of this experience has been the learning, and understanding the patients and what they go through,” she explained.

“The other day, a patient with dementia gave me a picture that he drew and coloured in. I'll always remember that.”

The group’s journey came full circle on 10 July, as they welcomed six new trainees to the 2025 program, leaving a word of encouragement to inspire the new starters.

“Stay confident that you’ll get through it, and be persistent with coming in and talking to new people. Try to enjoy every day while you’re learning,” said Cytheria.

“Enjoy every single shift and make the most of your placement, because it goes by way too quickly,” added Raihaana.

Nurse Educator Wendy Pinder says the positive impact of the program has resonated since its 2024 launch, as the trainees bring a fresh dose of enthusiasm and positive energy to the hospital.

“The students have integrated so well into the QEII wards. I've only heard positive feedback from their team members on the wards, and it lays a foundation for the rest of their careers,” said Wendy.

QEII wishes all graduating trainees success as they embark on the next phase of their learning, and a warm welcome to the 2025 newcomers!
