Logan’s Vandy Kamara is dedicated to improving the lives of people living with a disability and has had a profound impact across Metro South Health.

He and the entire Health Equity and Access Team (HEAT) team were named finalists at this year's Queensland Health Excellence Awards.

Vandy, originally from Sierra Leone in West Africa, brings a rich multicultural perspective to his work at HEAT.

The dedicated Senior Health Promotion Officer said being recognised for his work with Partnering With Consumers – the nominated award category - was both exciting and humbling.

He said his belief in the power of partnering with communities to improve health outcomes was central to his role.

“I strongly believe in partnering with people to improve their health and other outcomes, which is a critical building block in Health Promotion,” he said.

This philosophy aligns perfectly with the mission of the HEAT team, which collaborates with community stakeholders both within and outside of Metro South Health to create sustainable health outcomes for the most vulnerable populations.

“It is fulfilling to be part of this multidisciplinary, committed, and dedicated HEAT team, working tirelessly at all levels to achieve the strategic objectives of Metro South Health,” Vandy said.

“Their efforts have led to the development and implementation of MSH-wide Disability and Multicultural strategic action plans, as well as other data-driven and co-designed preventative health services within the community.”

Reflecting on the award ceremony, Vandy recalls the joy of attending as a finalist, interacting, and networking with other Queensland Health staff and Board members.

The experience was a testament to the importance of their work and the recognition of the impact they are making.

For Vandy, the HEAT team’s mission is vital to Metro South Health’s broader goals.

“The activities of the HEAT team mainly help to address the health disparities across the MSH health system and improve health equity in service delivery for MSH consumers,” he said.

This critical function is helping Metro South Health achieve its strategic goal of providing equitable services for all community members, regardless of their background or other factors.

While the HEAT team didn’t take out the winning title on the night their true victory lies in the lasting changes they are making in the community.
