Princess Alexandra Hospital’s stroke unit has received another accolade in the prestigious World Stroke Organisation Angels Awards, marking a milestone year of achievement.
The team was recognised in every quarter of 2025, securing two Platinum Awards and two Gold Awards, making PAH the only hospital in Queensland to reach this level.
PAH Stroke Unit Clinical Nurse Consultant Melissa Brooks said the awards highlight the strength of collaboration across divisions.
“We’re incredibly proud of this achievement, which is a testament to our dedicated multidisciplinary team working as one,” she said.
“There are so many clinicians, from nursing to allied health to medical, who all play a crucial role in delivering the best possible outcomes for our patients.
“From a nursing perspective, I’m incredibly proud of the skill, compassion and leadership our nurses demonstrate every day in this fast-paced environment.”
The Angels initiative, a partnership between the World Stroke Organization, European Stroke Organisation and Boehringer Ingelheim, aims to optimise stroke care worldwide by setting global benchmarks for best practice and improving patient outcomes.
PAH Consultant Neurologist and Stroke Unit Medical Lead, Dr Michael Devlin said PAH was one of only nine hospitals in Australia to receive four WSO Awards in 2025.
“Staff provide excellent and timely care in assessing and treating patients with stroke at PAH, and these awards recognise and reflect how well our hospital departments work together,” Dr Devlin said.
“Acting swiftly on the signs of stroke and implementing best practice care requires seamless coordination between ambulance, emergency department, radiology and stroke unit staff.
“Encouragingly, three referral sites to PAH, QEII, Ipswich and Toowoomba hospitals, also achieved an award for the fourth quarter of 2025.”
The continued recognition reinforces PAH’s position as a leader in stroke care, with a sustained focus on collaboration, innovation and delivering the best possible outcomes for patients.
Congratulations to the stroke unit and thank you for all that you do for our community.
