New graduate and Ward 5A Registered Nurse, Amaal Mohamed is proof that a little kindness goes a long way, after an exemplary display of person-centred care made a big impact earning her the PA Hospital Staff Award this April.

Going above and beyond comes naturally to Amaal, who expertly assisted a CALD patient to navigate a language barrier and a complex health journey.

From building rapport with the patient’s family, approaching conversation with gentleness, and breaking down barriers by communicating in their native language, Amaal expertly diffused the patient’s concerns with compassion and integrity.

“When they came in, the gentleman was very frustrated and anxious. I just told him to focus on breathing and focus on his healing journey, and that really helped him calm down,” she explained.

“You have to include the family and give them that reassurance that everything’s going to be okay and that what we’re doing is working.”

Amaal’s extraordinary support turned the situation around, bringing calm and leading the patient and his family to a happy outcome.

With the support of her new team behind her, Amaal looks forward to growing her skills on the general medicine ward.

“I was an EN here in Ward 5A, and when I finished my RN course I applied straightaway. I don’t want to leave.

“It can get hectic sometimes, but we have a really good team culture here. That’s the most beautiful thing and I wouldn't change it,” she said.

Congratulations on this well-deserved honour, Amaal, and thank you for your dedication to patient-centred care.
