An eight-person board with experience in health and business management has been appointed to help shape the future of healthcare in Brisbane’s southside, Logan, Redlands and the Scenic Rim.
The newly appointed Metro South Hospital and Health Board, announced today, will be led by new Chair Carmel Monaghan.
Ms Monaghan has held executive positions in healthcare in Australia and globally for more than 35 years, including most recently as the Australian Chief Executive Officer of Ramsay Health Care.
Ms Monaghan said she was thrilled to be leading Metro South Health, one of Australia’s largest public healthcare organisations.
“Metro South Health serves one of the fastest growing and most diverse communities in Queensland, and it’s a privilege to help guide the organisation into the future,” she said.
“I’m looking forward to meeting the many dedicated staff across our hospitals and services, and to working together to strengthen healthcare for the communities we serve.”
Ms Monaghan said the Board included three new faces in addition to continuing and reappointed members.
“Among the new members is Metro South Health clinician Dr Matthew Hope who is an orthopaedic surgeon and lead for the organisation’s Surgical Clinical Network.
“Dr Hope brings significant expertise in healthcare delivery and local knowledge to the Board.”
Ms Monaghan and Dr Hope are joined by two other new board members, Julia Hodgkinson and Dr Elizabeth Rushbrook CSC.
Four board members are either continuing or have been reappointed.
Metro South Health has joined all other Queensland Hospital and Health Services in welcoming a local frontline practitioner to its board.
Changes to the Hospital and Health Boards Act 2011 were announced last year, requiring all 16 of Queensland’s Hospital and Health Service Boards to include at least one Aphra registered health practitioner currently working for its local HHS.
These changes come into effect for the first time on 1 April 2026.
The board is responsible for the performance of its HHS and the delivery of local public health services under the Hospital and Health Boards Act 2011.
