Logan Hospital welcomes its new graduate midwives

Logan and Beaudesert hospital's newest midwifery graduates got a taste of real-life challenges as they practised evacuating a birthing parent from a birth pool and other essential techniques during a recent Graduate Skills Day.

The scenarios tested their teamwork, technical skills, and quick thinking, all in a safe, supportive environment under the guidance of experienced midwives.

Midwifery Educator Jodie Bunn said Graduate Skills Days were about more than just practising techniques.

“They’re about building confidence and learning to respond calmly in unexpected situations,” she said. “Moments like these give our new midwives invaluable hands-on experience before they step onto the ward.”

Throughout the day, graduates worked in small teams completing a variety of pregnancy and birth simulations, receiving personalised feedback and mentoring from their supervisors.

“The chance to practise in a realistic setting and learn directly from experienced midwives is an experience they’ll carry into their first year of practice,” Jodie said.

Over the coming year, these graduates will continue to grow and refine their skills across the Women’s and Children’s Division, supported every step of the way by senior midwives and Clinical Facilitators.

They join Queensland Health’s newest wave of midwifery graduates, ready to make a real difference in maternity care.
