Patient Jeanette Baker with nursing staff at Logan's Coronary Care Unit
Logan Hospital has introduced a new initiative to reduce wait times for patients like Jeanette Baker, who require a permanent pacemaker (PPM) implant.
Jeanette recently became the first to benefit from the hospital’s new direct-to-lab model, which enabled her to have her pacemaker procedure at the Princess Alexandra (PA) Hospital before returning the same afternoon to Logan Hospital for recovery, closer to home and in familiar surroundings.
Previously, Logan patients needing a PPM implant were transferred to the PA Hospital, where they stayed to recover.
Dr Bruno Jesuthasan said the new approach offered a more streamlined experience for patients.
“Patients undergo their pacemaker procedure in the morning and return to Logan Hospital later that day to recover,” he said.
To support the initiative, nursing staff in Logan’s Coronary Care Unit underwent additional training to provide specialised post-procedure monitoring and care.
Dr Jesuthasan said the establishment of a dedicated pacemaker follow-up clinic at Logan Hospital had further strengthened continuity of care and marked an important step toward expanding local cardiac services.
“We see this as a stepping stone to begin implanting pacemakers here at Logan once the planned cardiac catheterisation laboratory in Building 4 becomes operational in 2027,” he said.
