Logan Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) has officially launched Metro South Health’s first dedicated Women’s Hub to better support women experiencing sensitive health concerns.
The first-of-its-kind Hub was developed in response to powerful feedback from patients like April Lang, who sadly experienced the trauma of pregnancy loss in an ED setting. Her story, along with others like it, sparked a complete reimagining of how care is delivered to women in crisis.
Women’s Hub Medical Co-leads Dr Siti Noordin and Dr Harpreet Sandhu said several patients shared their deeply impactful experiences with pregnancy loss, highlighting the trauma they endured while navigating emergency care.
“We listened and worked closely with these women to co-design a space and model of care that is patient-centred, trauma-informed and better suited to the vulnerable nature of these presentations,” they said.
The 15-month project was shaped through close collaboration with consumer representatives, ED clinicians and Obstetrics and Gynaecology teams.
Doctors Noordin and Sandhu said consumer insight guided everything from the physical layout of the space to how care is delivered.
“This is more than just a physical space, it’s a meaningful shift in how we support women through some of the most vulnerable and emotional moments in their lives.”
Staffed by a compassionate multidisciplinary team - including medical staff, nurses, social workers and Indigenous health liaison officers - the Hub is currently open daily from 7am to 10pm for eligible patients*.
The initiative also includes streamlined care pathways developed in partnership with Obstetrics and Gynaecology, ensuring a seamless and coordinated journey through the Emergency Department.
“By pioneering the first Women’s Hub within an emergency setting, we are redefining how women’s health is supported in acute care settings, and we couldn’t have done it without the voices of our consumers,” said Dr Noordin and Dr Sandhu.
“This is their space, born from their stories, and we’re proud to have brought it to life.”
*The Women’s Hub supports females aged 16 and over who present to ED with pregnancy-related concerns such as bleeding or abdominal pain, non-pregnancy-related intimate health issues, or domestic and family violence.
