Logan Hospital has reached an important milestone, performing its first intravenous drug provocation test through the Anaesthetic Allergy Clinic.
Doctors Juliet Nayagam and Minka Grenier said the highly specialised test was considered the gold standard for confirming whether a drug was safe for patients who had previously experienced an allergic reaction or anaphylaxis under general anaesthesia.
The Logan Anaesthetic Allergy Clinic, which runs fortnightly, investigates suspected allergic reactions in patients undergoing anaesthesia. This includes a detailed review of patient history, anaesthetic records and prior investigations, along with intradermal skin testing.
“When skin test results are unclear, the drug provocation test provides a more definitive answer,” Dr Grenier said.
“The procedure involves carefully infusing very small amounts of the suspected drug, starting at around one hundredth of the normal dose, while closely monitoring for any signs of an allergic response. If no reaction occurs, the dose is gradually increased in a controlled setting.
“The test marks a significant step forward in local care and gives patients and clinicians greater confidence when planning future procedures.”
