With a smile as big as the day ahead, Troy Hayter practically ran out of Logan’s Palliative Care Ward and into the care of Ambulance Wish QLD (AWQ).
The Zimbabwe-born father of three was on his way to South Bank to surprise his family with a special day out in Brisbane.
Receiving care for a life-limiting illness, Troy’s wish was simple but meaningful: to watch his children swim at South Bank and take a ferry ride along the Brisbane River.
Thanks to the incredible team at AWQ, and with careful planning from his hospital care team, Troy’s wish became a reality.
The 49-year-old said the ferry ride held particular significance, bringing back memories from his teenage years.
“We moved to Australia from Zimbabwe in 1989 and lived in a migrant centre under the Story Bridge,” he recalled. “I would catch the ferry every day to go and get my mum and dad.”
Troy returned from the outing exhausted but overjoyed and said he was grateful for this rare opportunity to create memories with his family.
