A heartwarming new partnership is delivering care and comfort to QEII patients and strengthening community ties, thanks to the generosity of the Rotary Club of Toohey.
First launched in collaboration with QEII’s Volunteer Services in February 2025, the project delivers care packages direct to the bedsides of vulnerable patients.
Inside the packages, patients find high-quality personal care essentials acquired from local businesses and lovingly assembled by Toohey Rotary Club members.
Rotary Foundation Chair, Damien Tessmann says the project is a testament to community partnership in action.
“This was the Foundation’s first big project. We got about $5,000 in funding, and local businesses were keen to get involved,” he said.
“We’ve got everything from toothbrushes and toothpaste to shampoo, conditioner and deodorants. The bags are marked male and female, so we can include those essential sanitary products too.”
Christmas came early at QEII this October, as Damien and his team delivered 200 care packages to the hospital, marking the club’s second donation this year.
“A lot of people land themselves in hospital unexpectedly. The idea that we can make these items available for patients—particularly those who might be disconnected from their families or community because they are elderly, or they’re from a multicultural background—that’s what it’s all about,” said Damien.
“It’s been really well-received, so our hope is that we can build it out even more as the project grows legs.”
Volunteer Services Coordinator Amanda Spann was on hand to accept the donation on 22 October and coordinate distribution across the hospital.
A special thanks to the Toohey Rotary Club, local businesses, and QEII staff and volunteers for their ongoing support.
