QEII Hospital is saying farewell to one of its longest-serving team members this August, as Ward 2B Administration Officer, Cathy Ellis hangs up the clipboard after 45 remarkable years.
When she launched her QEII career in 1981, Cathy had little idea just how big a piece of her life the hospital would someday become.
"It all started when my now-94-year-old mother kindly suggested that I pop in and see if there was any casual work available," she explained.
"45 years later, I'm still on the books. That's the power of QEII."
Gaining experience in several roles across the hospital, Cathy found her place at Ward 2B, where she has flourished as Administration Officer for the past 27 years.
With four and-a-half decades under her cap, Cathy's long career has afforded her a front row seat to the hospital's evolution from a small community hospital to a world-class facility.
"Watching QEII transform from an 'olde world' hospital to a new age facility has been one of many highlights," she said.
Throughout decades of change and growth, Cathy says the support of her colleagues, and the reward of helping patients on their health journeys, has remained constant.
"The people are what's kept me here for so long, and the valued lasting friendships I have made. QEII is a very special place for the incredible care it provides to our community," she said.
Her advice to the next generation of healthcare workers is simple and heartfelt.
"Always do your very best for your patients and colleagues, no matter how small the task. Respect and kindness go a long way."
Cathy looks forward to trading in the 4.30am alarm for more quality time with her grandchildren and her favourite activities, "the gym, aqua aerobics, and lots of time in the surf."
"I also look forward to sharing my days with my husband, Roger, whom I have been married to for 50 wonderful years," she said.
"Every story has an ending. If it's a good story, you don't want it to end. Thank you, QEII."
