The QEII Behaviour Support Team (BeST) has received a $600 grant from the QEII Hospital Fund to purchase specialised resources that will help staff better support patients living with dementia.
BeST Occupational Therapist and successful grant applicant Lara Sonego said the funding will enable the team to purchase a range of reusable therapeutic and engagement resources, including talking photo albums, playing cards, ribbons, nuts and bolts, whiteboards and markers, and storage containers.
“The BeST team works alongside ward staff to provide education, practical strategies and interventions that help improve patient engagement and support safer care environments,” Lara said.
"This grant gives us the opportunity to purchase sustainable, reusable resources that can be used with this cohort of patients, helping staff better support patient wellbeing, engagement and behaviours on the ward."
The multidisciplinary team includes a Geriatrics Nurse, Occupational Therapists, Psychologist, Advanced Allied Health Assistant and Geriatrician, bringing together a broad range of expertise to support patients with complex behavioural and cognitive needs.
Lara said staff can be directly or indirectly affected by challenging and unpredictable behaviours associated with unmet needs.
“This can include responding to occupational violence incidents, such as Code Blacks, or experiencing carer and compassion fatigue when appropriate supports and resources are not available.
“By equipping staff with additional tools and resources, the BeST team hopes to enhance patient care, promote staff wellbeing and contribute to a safer and more harmonious ward environment.”
