State-of-the-art robotic technology has arrived at Metro South Health, marking the next generation of orthopaedic surgical precision and innovation across the region.
In a Queensland first for public hospitals, the team at Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) successfully performed a robotic total knee replacement using the Johnson & Johnson VELYS Robot, last Friday.
Staff at Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital (QEII) also performed their first case using the VELYS Robot a few days later.
PAH Orthopaedic Deputy Director Dr Peter Gifford said the team is extremely excited to be able to offer the best technology currently available for improved outcomes and faster recovery.
“Robotic-assisted surgery helps us plan for and perform knee replacement surgery that is tailored to each patient, and is designed to provide digital precision and accuracy,” said Dr Gifford.
“We’re already seeing the benefits of this technology following the first surgery at PA Hospital last week. The procedure was performed on a patient who had severe arthritis, and she was able to go home just two days post-surgery which is a fantastic result.”
Unlike traditional knee replacement methods, the robotic system assists surgeons by creating a detailed 3D model of the patient’s knee before surgery.
This allows for a highly personalised surgical plan and real-time adjustments during the procedure to ensure alignment and balance. (Surgeons remain in control throughout the operation and the device does not move on its own.)
These advancements can lead to less soft tissue damage, more natural joint movement, reduced post-operative pain, and faster recovery times.
While other public hospitals across Queensland offer similar robotic technology for knee replacements*, PAH is the first to use the Johnson & Johnson VELYS Robot.
Dr Gifford said the introduction of robotic-assisted orthopaedic surgery at PAH will also support ongoing education and innovation within the orthopaedic team.
“It’s an exciting step forward for our surgeons and, most importantly, for our patients,” he said.
This milestone at both PAH and QEII reinforces Metro South Health’s commitment to innovation, excellence, and providing world-class care to our community.
The hospitals are also working hard to treat more elective surgery patients so a huge congratulations to the dedicated clinicians for their exceptional efforts.
*Robotic technology for other surgical specialties has been used at PA Hospital for many years.
