Metro South Health has launched its first Youth Advisory Council, giving young people a voice in shaping the future of healthcare across our region.
The Council brings together a passionate group of young people who are eager to share their ideas, experiences and perspectives to help shape healthcare that truly works for their generation.
For Council member Ella, being part of the group is about making sure lived experience drives change.
“I’ve lived through the gaps in healthcare where the system doesn’t see the whole person,” she said.
“Young people like me aren’t just patients; we’re the proof that change is needed.
“When young people with lived experience lead the conversation, we don’t just speak to the pain, we speak to the solutions.”
Fellow Council member Abbey said the Council is also a powerful chance to share young First Nations voices.
“For so long, our stories and knowledge were overlooked, but moments like this remind us that our voices are not only valued but needed,” she said.
“By creating spaces where First Nations people can speak and be heard, we move closer to a future where understanding, respect, and true partnership are part of everyday life.”
The inaugural meeting of the Youth Advisory Council was held on 16 September, with the group meeting Metro South Health Board Chair Janine Walker and Acting Chief Executive Paula Foley.
Supporting the Council are Project Support Officers (Youth), Jenny Zheng and Beau Wharton, who are excited to help create a welcoming space where young people can be heard.
Both say they’re looking forward to working alongside such a thoughtful and enthusiastic group and making sure their contributions lead to real impact.
“The new Youth Advisory Council is exciting step for Metro South Health as it works to build services not just for young people, but with them,” Beau said.
“With so much passion and energy around the table, the future of healthcare in our region looks bright.”
