Mentorship takes on new meaning at Metro South Health, where Queensland Health’s first ever metro-based Sonography Clinical Educator, Danielle Bowles is blazing a trail for the next generation of sonographers.
A role model to her students and her peers, Danielle’s journey to mentorship is underpinned by a compassionate, innovative approach and a deep commitment to advancing patient-centred care.
Working across PA, Redland and Logan Hospitals since 2022, Danielle expertly developed the new role to support each facility’s unique needs and enhance the patient experience.
“It’s an absolute privilege to be able to shape the role into what it needs to be for each hospital’s ultrasound department. Because it was a new role, I was able to be really creative and try some innovative ideas, and everyone has been supportive of those innovations,” Danielle explained.
Supporting her students with hands-on workshops, peer-reviewed feedback models, and tailored mentorship programs, Danielle’s holistic approach has transformed the training program for students across Metro South Health and beyond.
“I get to spend more time with first and second-year students and see them develop and progress over those two years. This is a really nice foundation compared to other Allied Health streams, where students might move between placements every five weeks,” she explained.
“It is a massive learning curve for the students, and it doesn't stop when they graduate. We spend that second semester of the second year trying to build them up to a point where they can transition into independent practice and have the confidence to be an independent practitioner. There's a lot to do in two years, but the students always do a fabulous job.”
Between training the next generation of sonographers at QUT to mentoring and supporting qualified sonographers across Metro South, Danielle’s collaborative and supportive work ethic is bringing out the best in her mentees.
“The most gratifying part of my role is when it finally clicks for a student, and they have that aha moment, because they realise they can do this, and how it all fits together, what it means for the patient, and how they’ve helped that patient.”
Less than three years into her MSH tenure, Danielle has claimed a career-defining honour after being named the 2025 Tutor of the Year at the Australasian Sonographers Association (ASA) National Conference Gala in June.
Cited for going above and beyond to support her students with comprehensive clinical resources, a listening ear and an engaging, hands-on learning experience, Danielle’s compassionate, patient-centred approach is at the heart of her nomination.
“To find out that I was nominated was such an honour, and then to be told that I won the award was incredible. It's really lovely to have my work recognised for being useful and important to helping the students develop into being the best they can be.”
Congratulations, Danielle, and thank you for your dedication to the future sonographers of Metro South!
