With World Hand Hygiene Day fast approaching, Clinical Nurse Consultant Tain Gardiner is shining a light on effective handwashing.
Tain challenged Ward 5A/5B’s Martin Matimbire and Jennica Dacanay to take on the GlitterBug handwashing test, a fun and effective way to show just how well they were cleaning their hands.
“The GlitterBug test involves applying a special gel to the hands, having the person wash as they normally would, and then inspecting their hands under a blue UV light,” Tain said.
“The glowing spots left behind reveal exactly where germs might still be hiding which is a great visual reminder that technique matters.”
It might look like fun and games, but Tain said the GlitterBug test was a sparkly reminder that stopping the spread of infection started with all of us.
“Cleaning your hands properly stops the spread of germs that can make people sick,” she said.
“At Logan Hospital, the Infection Prevention and Management team works hand-in-hand with staff to uphold the highest standards of hand hygiene to keep our patients, visitors and staff safe.”
“With Monday 5 May being World Hand Hygiene Day, we’re spreading the message that clean hands save lives.”
Tain reminded everyone that hands should be cleaned after coughing or sneezing, when visibly dirty, before and after eating, and after using the toilet.
