Bayside Health nurses have joined forces to walk more than 1300 kilometres in August to raise awareness of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and support affected families.
Fourteen nurses from Lamb Ward and the Special Care Nursery took on the 3km-a-day challenge, covering 93 kilometres each across the month and raising $4,041.
Each year, around 3000 babies and young children die suddenly and unexpectedly. Funds raised through the challenge helps save little lives and provide counselling services to families living with the devastating loss of a baby or child.
Bayside Health Service Nurse Unit Manager Women and Children’s Aleria Harrold said the cause was close to the team’s heart.
“Everyone involved was motivated by the same thing – supporting families who are grieving and helping to prevent other parents going through this heartbreak,” she said. “As a group we clocked up 1325 kilometres, and knowing every kilometre counted towards raising awareness and funding support services made it an incredibly meaningful effort.”
Aleria said the team was grateful for the community’s encouragement and generosity.
“Together, with the backing of colleagues, friends and family, we raised just over $4,000. That money will go directly towards research and support for families at the toughest time,” she said.
