Quandamooka artist Tallulah Mewett has created a vibrant artwork for Redland Hospital’s new Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which opened in October as part of the hospital’s expansion.
Tallulah’s digital artwork, inspired by the Rainbow Serpent, reflects her deep connection to Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) and her culture.
“I’ve always felt a strong connection to the Rainbow Serpent and wanted to create something bright and uplifting for people in the ward,” Tallulah said.
“She represents life and guidance, and I hope the colours bring strength and hope to patients and families during difficult times.”
Tullulah grew up between the island and the mainland, always maintaining strong family ties and a sense of belonging to country.
“For me, art is how I express my culture,” she said. "Traditionally, Indigenous artwork from Minjerribah features a lot of cross hatching and natural colours. My artwork is not just about traditional forms it’s about family, identity and finding your own way to connect.
“I’ve incorporated bright colours and love hearts. The river beside the serpent mirrors the journey of life - sometimes calm, sometimes challenging, but always moving forward.
“This piece is a reminder that we are never alone. We are part of a bigger story of land, of family, of spirit and together we heal.”
