Redland Hospital’s Intensive Care Outreach Nurse (ICON) team helps keep some of the hospital’s sickest patients safe.

Intensive Care Outreach Nurse Jane Healy said the ICON team helps ward staff spot and respond early when a patient’s condition worsens, so they get the right care at the right time.

“The team works closely with nurses, doctors and allied health staff to assess patients, educate staff and support decisions,” she said.

“Sometimes we help manage a patient safely on the ward with a clear plan and close monitoring. Other times, we escalate care quickly if they need to go to the Intensive Care Unit.

“We also support staff at the bedside, especially junior nurses, with education, leadership and practical guidance in real time.”

The team also provides clinical leadership after hours and coordinates care across teams.

Intensive Care Outreach Nurse Amanda Simmons said the role focuses on improving outcomes for patients and staff.

“Our aim is early identification and early escalation,” Ms Simmons said.

“By providing extra support, we help prevent deterioration, improve patient safety and build confidence in our nursing teams.

“These roles improve staff morale and job satisfaction; and support better patient outcomes.”

Ms Simmons said the opportunity to help shape the culture of the hospital’s new ICU and support a growing health service was a key reason she was drawn to the role at Redland Hospital.

“As Redland Hospital continues to grow, roles like ICON become even more important in supporting staff, strengthening safety and quality, and delivering the best possible care for patients,” she said.
