Dr Kangxran Lim says working on Minjerribah/North Stradbroke Island has helped build his confidence as a doctor while connecting him to a unique island community.
Dr Lim has spent the past three months working at Marie Rose Centre, Redland Hospital and Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre, Gundu Pa as part of his GP training.
“Working at Marie Rose Centre, you get to know local patients and people are really friendly,” he said.
Marie Rose Centre helps provide healthcare closer to home for island residents and visitors, reducing the need for travel to the mainland where appropriate.
Dr Lim said the role offered doctors valuable experience in independent decision making while still being well supported by teams across Bayside Health Service.
“Sometimes, early in your career, having the confidence to make a difficult decision is a skill you need to develop, on Straddie you need to do that in a good way,” he said.
“You are well supported by consultants across the health service.”
Outside of work, Dr Lim said he quickly fallen in love with the island lifestyle and natural environment.
“We have Point Lookout, we have Amity Beach as well, so if you are a beach person, it’s the best place to be,” he said.
“I’m really looking forward to July as well to see the whales, and hopefully humpbacks,” he said.
