Graeme Ramsden, an Ormiston local, brought in a celebratory cake to share with staff at Redlands Satellite Health Centre Kidney Dialysis Unit, marking one year of dialysis.

Graeme thanked nurses, doctors and pharmacists who, in his words, create “a really nice spirit in this place".

Attending the Redlands Satellite Health Centre Kidney Dialysis Unit three times a week, he said the experience was about more than machines and medications.

“The staff here are caring and friendly, you can feel how proud they are of this place,” he said.

He also credits his “Grumpy Old Men” mates, a veterans’ coffee-and-gym group formed after a heart-health program, for keeping people connected.

“Connection matters. Our group meets for coffee, celebrates birthdays, raises money for charity and looks out for each other,” he said. “When issues pop up, there’s always someone who’s been there and can help you ask the right questions. That support keeps you going.”

Nurse Unit Manager Sharon Cottingham said the team was delighted to share the moment.

“Dialysis is a big commitment, around four hours on the machine, three days a week,” she said.

“Our goal is safe, person-centred care every visit. Seeing patients thriving, celebrating and staying connected is the best feedback we can get.”
