Starting her career in health during NAIDOC week, young First Nations Leader Anika Anderson said the Deadly Start nursing traineeship at Redland Hospital was a great opportunity.

“To connect with my culture, I do traditional dancing at school, and I am one of the First Nations Captains,” she said. “I think doing these activities and my traineeship will help my mob and community heal from the past.”

Anika’s Indigenous heritage is on her mum’s side, as a proud member of the Goreng Goreng people from the Bundaberg region.

Her first day on Stradbroke Ward was a success, with Anika showing confidence and curiosity.

The Deadly Start program provides Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with career pathways in health while helping build a culturally capable workforce.
