The Association of Anaesthetists has recognised Bayside anaesthetist Dr John Ward, who joined Bayside Health Service after relocating to Australia, with the Anniversary Medal at its Winter scientific meeting (our Summer).
The Anniversary Medal recognises significant contributions to anaesthesia, supporting healthcare development projects internationally, including training and essential equipment provision.
Acting Director of Medical Services Dr Rachel Wong congratulated Dr Ward and highlighted the value of his global experience.
“Having someone of John's calibre, who’s influenced anaesthesia practice internationally, is invaluable for Bayside,” Dr Wong said.
Originally from the UK, Dr Ward's medical career spans more than two decades, earning respect for his calm management of complex clinical cases and commitment to patient-centred care.
He is credited with playing a crucial role in guiding the Association through significant challenges, notably during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Colleague and fellow anaesthetist Dr Matt Wiles said Dr Ward's approach during complex medical situations inspired many young doctors, including himself.
“Watching John manage furiously complex cases convinced me to pursue a career in anaesthesia,” Dr Garrett said. "He has a calm measured approach, he’s very humble and self-deprecating—someone who works tirelessly behind the scenes,” he said.
