Dedicated Allied Health volunteer Kevin Kelly has been named the year’s first QEII Staff Rewards & Recognition Individual Award winner.
Speaking to all staff, Acting Executive Director Julie Argus said Kevin had received the award for consistently making QEII patients feel safe and welcome.
“Kevin always meets and greets our patients with a smile,” she said.
Reflecting on the nearly four years he has spent working at QEII, Kevin says the best part of his role is connecting with others.
“When my wife passed away seven years ago, I had retired from my career in the police force, and I wasn't really interested in doing much or seeing anyone for six months, but when someone suggested I might enjoy doing some volunteer work, I thought I’d give it a go," Kevin said.
"What keeps me coming back is the people I work with, and the people I am helping.”
Kevin says the strong support and training provided to volunteers gives him and colleagues the confidence to assist staff and patients throughout the hospital.
“We receive good training and are respected by medical staff for the job we do. We also have a wonderful Volunteer Coordinator to support us while we are at work. We get to meet new and interesting people every day and make them feel seen and heard,” Kevin said.
“Volunteering at QEII is a rewarding and professional pursuit. I love coming to work each week knowing I'm making a difference.”
Well done Kevin!
