Driving positive cultural transformation within the Central Sterilising Department (CSD) is all in a day’s work for QEII Nurse Unit Manager Antony Kocheril, who has been named QEII’s Nurse of the Year.

Antony was recognised for his steady, inclusive leadership style that supports staff wellbeing, sustains service delivery, and strengthens surgical services behind the scenes.

Seven years into his nursing journey at QEII, Antony says working with a committed and resilient team continues to inspire him every day.

“I’m fortunate to work alongside colleagues who consistently support one another and strive to provide the best possible service for our patients and clinical teams.

“This award reflects the dedication and hard work of the entire CSD team at QEII," Antony said.

Day to day, Antony said his priorities include staff wellbeing, strengthening quality processes, improving workflow efficiency, and fostering a positive workplace culture where staff feel empowered, valued, and engaged in continuous improvement.

“What motivates me most is knowing that the work we do directly contributes to patient safety and surgical outcomes,” he said.

“Although patients may never see the CSD team, our role is critical behind the scenes.”

He believes strong organisational culture plays a vital role in successful nursing teams.

“When staff feel psychologically safe, supported, and appreciated, they are more engaged and motivated to perform at their best,” Antony said.

“Positive culture improves teamwork, communication, retention, and ultimately patient outcomes.”

On the subject of effective leadership, Antony said his top tips are active listening, remaining calm under pressure, and acting with integrity and empathy.

“If I can lead by example and stay approachable, I know I’m on the right track.”
