After an incredible 40-year career in nursing, including more than three decades dedicated to cancer care, Monique Richter is farewelling a profession she served with unwavering dedication.
Monique began her nursing journey in March 1986, completing her training at Rockhampton Base Hospital before heading to the Gold Coast. By 1990, she settled in Brisbane where a role at Greenslopes Hospital sparked what would become a lifelong passion for cancer nursing.
“I have worked in cancer care for much of the past 35 years,” she said. “It’s been an incredibly rewarding journey, and I’ve seen so many changes and advancements along the way.”
Her career also included a six-year stint in South West Queensland, further broadening her experience and impact across the state.
Since joining Princess Alexandra Hospital in 2017 within the Division of Cancer Services, Monique has undertaken a variety of roles including Clinical Nurse, Nurse Educator, Nurse Unit Manager and Clinical Nurse Consultant.
She was most recently the NUM of PAH Cancer Satellite Services and played a pivotal role in expanding care closer to patients’ homes.
“My current role has been a real highlight,” she said. “Being involved in establishing these clinics has been a great joy.”
Throughout her career, Monique said it’s been the people who have inspired her the most.
“It’s the staff and the patients that keep me coming back every day,” she said. “I love what I do, being a support to my staff, teaching them and watching them grow in their professional life is very satisfying.
“Delivering high quality care to our cancer patients is also a source of great pride.”
Among her proudest achievements is the establishment of two satellite services, where she led the recruitment and development of new teams and helped shape services that are making a real difference to communities.
“Opening the clinics, onboarding staff, watching them flourish, and seeing the positive impact on our patients is something I’m very proud of,” she said. “I’m also proud of my work as an educator. When staff tell me I’ve had a positive influence on them, it really means a lot.”
As she looks ahead to retirement, her focus shifts from caring for others to enjoying more time with loved ones and exploring new adventures.
“I am most looking forward to spending time with my husband, traveling and around Australia with our camper and going out on the water in our boat. I am also very much looking forward to watching my grandchildren grow and develop, they are just a delight.”
Thank you, Monique, for your commitment to caring for others, mentoring staff, and leaving behind a legacy that will continue to impact many lives.
