Senior Audiologist Jean Malig
Senior Audiologist Jean Malig knows what it’s like to be learning the ropes, and is now using her own experience and compassion to help shape the future of her profession.
Her journey at PA Hospital began during her clinical placement where she thrived under the guidance of senior staff who she describes as a ‘wealth of knowledge’.
Now, after building a successful career, Jean says it’s a privilege to be that guiding presence for others as students take their first steps into the clinical world.
“Being on the other end of that journey and providing supervision is really special,” Jean said.
“We’ve recently concluded the last two students for the year. It’s all about making sure their experience in diagnostic audiology is a positive one.
“We always tell them it’s a safe space; we’re not hand holding them but we’re there to jump in if they need us.”
That support and kindness embody Jean’s commitment to ensure the future of the service is in good hands, with her dedication felt far beyond supervising students.
This year Jean was tasked with leading the review of the professional guidelines for Audiology.
“It’s all about making sure the references are up to date and ensuring best practices, along with making sure we’re up to date with current evidence,” she said.
“There’s a special sense of responsibility knowing it dictates how we do things.”
And her efforts certainly didn’t go unnoticed.
Jean was recently awarded the PA Hospital Staff Award for October, earning praise from the Director of Audiology, David Da Silva.
“She has contributed her wealth of experience and skills to the update of the guidelines while managing a full case load and leading student supervision,” said David.
“Her patient centred care is exemplary, her support for students is wonderful, and her impact on the broader team drives them all to give their best.”
Despite the recognition, Jean remains humble at heart. “I just love what I do,” she said simply.
She credits her passion for the job to her colleagues and the variety within her role.
“We’re such a small team but we do so much, and the synergy between us all is amazing,” she said.
Congratulations on this incredible recognition Jean, and thank you for investing into the future of health.
