Metro South Health provides critical healthcare for patients in emergencies. We are not equipped to provide shelter for people who do not have an emergency healthcare needs.
We encourage people who do not need emergency hospital care to seek shelter at a local temporary refuge shelter.
For people who need NDIS care, but do not need emergency hospital care – we ask that carers contact the NDIS crisis referral hotline 1800 595 277.
Where to go if you need shelter
Councils have set up temporary places of refuge, or shelters. These shelters will be short-term facilities designed to protect people during the predicted peak wind period of Tropical Cyclone Alfred and are a place of last resort.
These facilities include only basic amenities and will not have beds, cooking facilities or food provided. Residents attending shelters should bring limited belongings, but consider bringing non-perishable food, any essential medication, and essential personal documents.
Please note that pets are not allowed at the shelters. Please check your local council’s disaster dashboard for more details about refuge shelters.
