Adiola Mazambani’s approach to mental health care is shaped by a blend of cultures, experiences and a deep belief in connection.
The Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHs) Team Leader said her understanding of care has grown over the course of her career. After completing her nursing degree and early training in the United Kingdom, Adiola has worked across both England and Australia, gaining experience in different health systems.
Alongside evidence-based practice, her approach has been strongly influenced by Zimbabwean values, where community and shared responsibility are central to wellbeing.
“Ubuntu which translates to ‘I am because we are’ is something I have always carried with me.”
Adiola said that while health systems differed across countries, they shared a common thread, and she has learned to bring these approaches together in her care.
“What has been powerful across my journey is recognising that while health systems differ, the core human need for connection does not.”
“I’ve come to appreciate the fusion rather than the contrast. English systems emphasised accountability and rigour. Australian systems emphasise recovery orientation and multidisciplinary collaboration. Zimbabwean values emphasise relational depth and collective strength. Rather than choosing one lens, I’ve learned to integrate them.”
In her role within CYMHs, Adiola supports children and families during times of crisis. She said one of the most meaningful parts of her work was holding hope for families when it felt out of reach.
“The young people and families I’ve worked with have shaped me profoundly. Their resilience and honesty continually refine how I practise,” she said.
“I’ve learnt that care is not just technical; it is relational. It’s about being curious instead of reactive. It’s about understanding behaviour in context developmental, cultural, systemic.”
Her colleagues, who nominated her for a Leadership in Excellence Award last year, have also played an important role in shaping her practice, offering support, challenge and perspective.
“Leadership can be isolating, but I’ve learned that it shouldn’t be,” Adiola said.
“Culture doesn’t happen by accident. It looks like being consistent, modelling reflection and encouraging respectful challenge rather than silent agreement.”
“Ubuntu continues to guide me here. Leadership, to me, is not hierarchical dominance, it is shared responsibility. When one of us grows, we all grow.”
