Logan takes the win at the A Better Choice Healthcare Awards

Logan Hospital’s Retail Food Services team has put sustainability front and centre in the way staff, patients, and visitors access food.

Recently, that commitment was recognised with the Health and Wellbeing Queensland Excellence in Sustainability Award, part of the inaugural A Better Choice (ABC) Healthcare Awards.

The awards celebrate the great work of individuals, teams, facilities and health services across Queensland who are reshaping food policy and community health.

From reducing food waste and improving packaging, to working with environmentally responsible suppliers, the team has embedded sustainable practices into every part of their service.

In the spotlight was the transformation of the hospital’s vending machine services to be stocked daily with fresh, in-house-prepared sandwiches, salads, and nutritious meals, and the introduction of hot food vending machines that provide 24/7 access to hot meals.

An innovative custom-designed sandwich container also helped to secure their win.

Retail and Quality Assurance Coordinator, Sarah Hautaniemi said the container was created to better fit vending machines and minimise waste, an idea now drawing interest from other health services.

“These efforts formed part of the hospital’s work to embed the ABC strategy, which promotes healthier food and drink options across healthcare,” Sarah said.  “Our in-house approach allows us to continually refresh options, reduce waste, and provide healthier, more appealing choices for staff and visitors.”
