Our nurses give world class health care to our patients, putting them at the centre of everything we do.
We work closely with patients to make sure we:
- know and meet their needs
- involve them in choices about their care
- give them a positive care experience that leads to better health.
What it’s like to be a nurse here
Our nurses tell us our hospital is a dynamic and rewarding place to work.
Joining our team can open up exciting pathways to grow and advance your career.
Our team and culture
We have a diverse team of over 3,000 registered, enrolled and assistant nurses.
All our nurses meet the standards for practice set out by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
We base our care on the latest research to ensure good clinical practice and improve patient outcomes.
Our strong culture of inquiry helps us discover new ways to improve our clinical practices and improve patient health.
Our commitment to lifelong learning
Our nurses work to improve the quality of their nursing and practice throughout their career. Many go on to postgraduate study and attain higher qualifications.
Whatever stage you’re at in your nursing career, we have opportunities for you to learn and develop your knowledge and skills.
These include:
- orientation for new and returning nurses
- workshops, in-service and networking for enrolled and assistant nurses
- ongoing professional development for all nurses
- preceptorship and leadership training.
Magnet® designation
We became the first healthcare organisation in the Southern Hemisphere to achieve Magnet® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Centre (ANCC).
We've held this status since 2004 and are 1 of 2 Queensland Hospitals recognised under the Magnet Recognition Program®.
The international program provides us with a roadmap to nursing excellence.
It recognises:
- our nurses and the high-quality care they give patients
- the opportunities and support we give our nurses
- our commitment, spirit and positive team environment.
Being a Magnet® organisation also creates a culture at the hospital where:
- we value input from clinicians when we make decisions
- our work practice reviews are transparent
- we support personal and professional development.
More than 30 years of evidence-based research support the program and its benefits for patients and nursing staff.
Magnet® redesignation 2024: have your say
In November 2024, we're applying for re-designation as a Magnet organisation.
Patients, family members, staff, and interested parties who would like to comment on the process are encouraged to do so via email and direct mail to the Magnet Program Office by 2 November 2024.
Details on how to submit your feedback are provided in the public notice.
Our professional practice model
Our nurses work together to create a model for how we work. It puts patients at the centre of our care and outlines our values and the level of service we give them.
Valuing our nurses and their work
We make sure our nurses know their value and the difference they’re making to the lives of Queenslanders. Each year we reward and recognise their contributions at our International Nurses Day ceremony, held during the week of 12 May.
