Logan Hospital’s Endoscopy Unit is helping to make healthcare more accessible by training the next generation of Nurse Practitioner (NP) Endoscopists.
The team recently hosted a hands-on workshop for NP candidates from across Queensland, supporting them to take a big step forward in their careers.
Logan’s Nurse Practitioner Endoscopist Bronagh Costello said the Clinical Skills Development Workshop was an important part of the QUT Master of Nurse Practitioner Endoscopist Program.
“Over two years, the candidates will become endorsed Nurse Practitioners and credentialed Endoscopists, helping more patients get the care they need sooner,” she said.
Bronagh, who completed her NP Endoscopist training at Logan in 2020, now leads the development of the role within Logan’s Gastroenterology Service and lectures for the QUT program.
Three candidates took part in this year’s workshop, each supported by their local Gastroenterologists.
“We were pleased to welcome Marilyn Umney and Jincy C from Caboolture Health Service, and Gerard Bennett from Cairns and Hinterland Health Service, guided by Nurse Practitioner Endoscopist trainer Debra Whittaker,” Bronagh said.
Bronagh said Logan’s Endoscopy Unit has proudly delivered this training since the NP Endoscopist model of care was introduced in Queensland, showing their commitment to improving access, fostering teamwork, and supporting excellence in healthcare.
“This year, Logan’s Deputy Director of Gastroenterology, Dr Sabanathan, also joined the QUT academic team as an Associate Professor and lead trainer for the workshop. Dr Sabanathan has worked closely with NP Endoscopists at Logan and is passionate about delivering high-quality training.
Together, Logan’s staff and educators are creating a future where healthcare is more accessible, patient-centred, and collaborative.
